Are these HAM AND SWISS CHEESE SLIDERS as popular as we think they are?!
As in, have you ever taken a bite of one of these little delicious comforting sliders in your life?
Because if you HAVEN’T, we NEED to change that immediately.
Commonly referred to as “Funeral Rolls” these little babies are delectable, savory, caramelized sweet buns of delight.
Typically these sliders are made with slices of salty ham and swiss cheese on sweet mini rolls (in this instance, Hawaiian Rolls), then poured with a savory mustard brown sugar butter sauce. They’re baked until golden brown and crispy on top with the ham warmed through and the cheese delightfully melty.
Is your mouth watering yet?!? Let us tell you more.
In most versions, poppyseeds are used on top for an extra flavor crunch punch. And of course, they’re included in this Ham and Swiss Cheese Slider recipe. And luckily we had a little hand helper with the sprinkling (see picture above!).
Let’s get into the details of this addicting butter sauce.
Butter is melted and used to caramelize minced shallots for a beautiful flavor profile. As mentioned above, brown sugar is added in until dissolved and then whisked together with dijon mustard and worcestershire sauce. It’s then flavored with salt until perfectly homogenized.
The buttery mustard sauce is poured on top of the sliders until completely covered, it also pools to the bottom of the dish to crisp the bottom layer of the rolls while baking. Which, just let us focus on that for one second, is absolutely DIVINE!
They’re then baked until perfectly toasted, cheese is melty, and ham is warmed through. The buttery mustard sauce coats each slider top perfectly and then using the broiler after baking is totally optional. We personally love the crispy toasted bits on top that give these sliders an extra delightful crunch when bitten into.
But you do you, Boo!

Notes
- AM I ABLE TO ADJUST THE SAUCE INGREDIENTS?
The poppyseeds are completely optional for garnishing. As for the mustard it can be changed to yellow mustard or stone ground mustard. However, we would highly suggest dijon mustard for the vinegary bold flavor it adds. As for the butter, brown sugar, and worcestershire sauce; we would suggest not substituting those ingredients. If you prefer, the shallots can also be optional BUT they give so much depth to this recipe and really provide a sharp sweetness that compliment the sliders flavor profile perfectly.
2. I DON’T CARE FOR HAM AND SWISS CHEESE, CAN I USE A DIFFERENT MEAT OR CHEESE?
Absolutely, use your preferred sliced meat and cheese slices. Just make sure the sliced meat and cheese slices are thinly sliced and not too thick. Some great substitutions would be turkey and gruyere cheese or roast chicken with provolone or sharp cheddar.
3. CAN THESE BE PREPPED AHEAD OF TIME?
Yes! These can be made until the sauce is poured and then refrigerated before baking. Take the sliders out the fridge and leave on the counter for about 20-30 minutes to come to room temperature before baking. If you can’t let them come to room temperature, add a little bit of baking time to the total time but watch the tops of the rolls as they can start browning or blackening quickly. However, the top of the rolls getting crispy is one of our favorite parts!
Much love,
